Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (born 1956) is a former Iranian president who served from 2005 to 2013. He rose to prominence as mayor of Tehran before being elected president. During his tenure, he was known for his controversial views and harsh rhetoric toward the West.

Ahmadinejad believes in an "Islamization of science" and has advocated a greater role for Islam in Iranian society. He has also denied the Holocaust and called Israel a "Zionist entity" that should be ousted from the Middle East. His remarks have led to international protests and sanctions against Iran.

Ahmadinejad's government was also known for its harsh repression of political opposition. Many Iranians accused him of undermining their rights and using violence to suppress their protests. In 2009, a disputed presidential election occurred in which Ahmadinejad was reelected, although many viewed the electoral process as rigged.

Despite his controversial views and policies, Ahmadinejad also had some support in Iran. He advocated populist economic policies and promoted the development of Iran's infrastructure. Some also appreciated his commitment to Iranian self-determination and his call for an equal place for Iran in the international community.

Ahmadinejad is no longer in office today and has largely withdrawn from Iranian politics. However, his controversial views and policies have left their mark and secured his place in Iran's history.
